Growing from Our Past

2/24/2020

This Sunday we were joined by Rev. Dottie Mathews, associate minister at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Columbia, Missouri.  She had recently been on a learning journey in El Salvador, listening to the stories of those living with the violence there.  Years ago, Rev. Dottie said, she had heard news reports about the US government's intervention in those countries, but she didn't look into it deeply.  Now she is working to know better and do better, to move past fear-inducing stereotypes about places like El Salvador to come close to the experiences of the real people there, people who live surrounded by soldiers, guns, and barbed wire, who carry the scars of horrific violence and who sometimes flee because they have no other choice, but who nonetheless live and work and love their country.

Rev. Dottie's central conclusions were these:
That people who have suffered need to tell their stories and to be heard.
That compassion cannot be uninquisitive; that we must look deeply into our own nation's role and the benefits that have come to us from what happened.
And that we are all capable of violence - that the perpetrators are scarred human beings as well.

Today was also the next-to-last Sunday of our annual our Guest At Your Table observance to highlight and support the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee.  Today, Alicia White told us about how the UUSC partners with grassroots organizations and women community leaders in Central America in working to end gender-based violence and secure human rights for all.

Next Sunday, March 1st:

Guest At Your Table Ends.
Please submit any donations to support the UUSC to our Treasurer, Bob Antweiler.  You can also learn more about the UUSC's work or donate at any time at UUSC.org.

Hope, Rage, and Resilience

2/9/2020

This morning, we continued exploring our monthly theme of Resilience with reflections on part of what we're up against.  We shared a sermon that Rev. Marlin Lavanhar of All Souls Unitarian in Tulsa, Oklahoma gave in 2016, in the wake of a police killing of a black member of the Tulsa community.  Lavanhar discussed the many destructive ways in which racism is embedded in our society; not for nothing has it been called the USA's "Original Sin."  Moving away from it requires more than just changes in laws, it requires slower and more arduous changes in culture and in hearts, including our own.  Lavanhar suggested that if we recognize the wave of change that is happening in our time, if we don't vilify those who disagree but focus on learning, re-wiring, and healing together, we can lift our tragic losses into sacredness and move toward new life, toward the shape of justice.

If you missed it (or would like to hear it again), you can view the sermon online (Warning: the video contains disturbing images of racist violence.)

We also continued this year's Guest At Your Table program in support of the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee.  This week, Alicia White highlighted indigenous women activists from low-lying island countries.  The UUSC is supporting their work for climate justice as their homes are threatened with destruction.  For more information, take one of the Guest At Your Table booklets available at the Fellowship or visit UUSC.org.

This Tuesday, February 11th at 7 pm in their Art Gallery, Missouri River Regional Library hosts an Author Talk with NiNi Harris.  NiNi Harris has researched and written 14 books on St. Louis history and architecture. She will discuss This Used to be St. Louis, taking a look at the layered history of the city from the French colonial era and the Civil War to the waves of immigrants who came to the state from all over the world and the great migration from the South that brought rural African Americans and whites to the city. St. Louis’s distinctive ethnic neighborhoods, its architectural and cultural heritage, its entrepreneurial spirit, and its many industries and businesses all contributed to the texture of this major U.S. city. Her book will be available for sale and signing after the program.  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more library events, visit MRRL.org.

This Wednesday, February 12th at 7 pm in their Art Gallery, MRRL presents: "Reel Life Cinema: GI Jews: Jewish Americans in World War II."  This documentary tells the story of the 550,000 Jewish men and women who served in World War II—as active participants in the fight against Hitler, bigotry and intolerance. Jewish Americans fought on two fronts: for America and for Jews worldwide. Like all Americans, they fought against fascism, but they also fought on a more personal fight—to save their brethren in Europe. In the midst of it all, they battled anti-Semitism within the ranks of the U.S. military, facing slurs and violence from their fellow service members. The film features interviews with WWII veterans including Mel Brooks, Bea Cohen and Carl Reiner.  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more library events, visit MRRL.org.

Resilience means Starting Again

2/2/2020

Don't forget our annual Chili Supper this Saturday, February 8th at 5:30 pm!  Come enjoy food, live music, chair massage, raffle, and more!  Tickets are $10 for adults; children 6 and under enter free.  Spread the word and bring friends!

This Sunday, Rev. Mike Adamek joined us to begin our month of reflection on Resilience.  Resilience, he said, is having the maturity to let go of situations and relationships that aren't working and start again, to get back up even after being smashed flat.  Deep down, it's the ability to accept and respond to the world as it is, rather than clinging to how we wish it was.  A key factor is how we respond to fear.  Do we fear a future of loss and paint all of life in bleakness and scarcity, or do we open ourselves to the possibility of a future where problems are solvable and we are loved?

This week, we also began the annual Guest At Your Table initiative to support the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee in their work for human rights and connections with grassroots partners throughout the world.  This year's theme is "Women Leaders, Strong Communities."  For the next four weeks, Alicia White will be sharing stories about the UUSC's work.  You are invited to take home a brochure and donation box, and we will collect the donations on Sunday, March 1st.  For more information, contact Alicia or visit uusc.org.

Integrity in Diversity

This morning, we finished our month of reflections on Integrity with a message from our wider Unitarian Universalist community, offered via video.  Rev. Dr. Victoria Weinstein of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Greater Lynn in Massachusetts spoke on "The Integrity of Atheism."  What brings us together and makes us diverse as UUs, Rev. Weinstein said, transcends questions like "What god do you worship" and "Theist or Atheist?"  The call to community and spiritual experience transcends all such boundaries.  However, she suggested that non-theists offer a particular and valuable perspective that enriches our faith community: they point to the need for thought and clarity in our ideas about the sacred, and remind us that a belief in God is not needed to live a moral life.  As we open the doors to our UU Churches, Rev. Weinstein said, we don't care what you do or don't worship; we care about creating meaning and beloved community together.

If you missed today's service or would like to hear the message again, you can view it online: https://youtu.be/lKwL6qFxkuI

Seeing the Whole, Being the Whole

1/5/2020

Our January Newsletter and Print Calendar are now available to view or download:

This morning, Rev. Mike Adamek joined us to begin the new year and to begin our month of focus on Integrity.  Integrity, he says, has two relevant meanings: the first is fidelity to strong principles, but he focused on the second: a state of undividedness and wholeness.  Rev. Mike cited Erik Erikson's stages of psychosocial development, which see us coming in our elder years to a decision between Integrity and Despair.  The Integrity path asks us to make meaning of our lives and own them in all their imperfections.  In accepting the wholeness of ourselves, we can also accept our place in an integral whole that we cannot fully judge or control, but that carries our impact beyond our own lives.  This viewpoint can enrich us not only in old age but in any season.

Letting Go of 2019

12/29/2019

Our January Calendar is now available to view or download: UUFJC January 2020 Calendar.
Our January newsletter has been delayed due to the holidays and will be available next Sunday.

Today, for our last Sunday service of 2019, we observed our annual ritual of letting go.  Our usual fire ceremony was unavailable, and this time we shared a few minutes to think of what we wanted to let go, then we were each invited to take a stone (if you weren't there, you can find one on your own).  In the coming week, when the thought or feeling you want to let go of comes to you, take the stone in your hand and visualize transferring the feeling into it.  When you are ready, go to a place that feels purifying (perhaps outdoors, or to a body of water), and throw the stone away, focusing on the idea that your burden is going with it.

While today's service was our last Sunday morning of the year, it was not our last time to come together!  Please join us tomorrow, Monday, December 30th at 6:30 pm, for our special year-end service: "An Evening of Community and Hope."  The service will offer reflection and encouragement, with meditation, rituals, and thoughts from special guests.  A collection for ongoing tornado relief efforts will be taken, and childcare will be provided.  Open to the community --- please spread the word and invite others!  For more information, contact  Alexis at [email protected].

Next Sunday, January 5th, 2020:

Message: "Integrity: So Who Am I Really?," Rev. Mike Adamek
Erik Erikson's last stage of psychosocial development is Integrity vs. Despair.  In these long dark nights of winter, a mind at any age can turn to questions about our development or stagnation as a person. Is the internal critic looking at our lives day by day, too critical or not critical enough? Which is it easier, to know where we fall short, or to know when we are good enough to be a person of integrity?

Standing Up for True Awe

12/8/2019

This morning, Alexis continued our month of reflections on Awe with a story from the Hebrew Bible: the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the Fiery Furnace (Daniel, chapter 3).  Faced with the glorious spectacle of an occupying empire and even with the full threat of its violence, these characters still remained true to their own convictions about what should command their awe and worship.  A fictional story written at a time when such conflicts were all too real, it reveals some Jews of that era lifting up nonviolent resistance.  Most of us thankfully don't face death by fiery furnace, but even today, governments try to instill awe with their violence.  Especially at this time of year, our culture and industry seek to awe us with their glamour and spectacle.  But each of us has a truth within us that power can't control.  What really lifts you up and strengthens you?  What helps you live with compassion?  What gives you hope, and inspires you to be an agent of hope?  How can you stand firm and uplift what is truly awesome for you?

And as a holiday fundraiser for the Fellowship, we have two raffle baskets now on display near the cafe bar, filled with wine and treats for holiday entertaining or just for treating yourself.  The drawing will be held in two weeks, on Sunday, December 22nd, so don't wait!  For tickets and more information, contact Carol Bontempo.

Planning has begun for our annual Chili Supper, coming Saturday, February 8th, 2020.  We are seeking chili-makers and other chefs, live music, games, silent auction and raffle items, and more!  To get involved, please contact Bob Antweiler or Alberta Mobley.

This Tuesday, December 10th at 7 pm, Patt Behler is hosting an informal discussion at her home for UUFJC members and friends.  The topic: “Creativity.”  Contact Patt for more information.

Attention to Miracles All Around Us

11/3/2019

This morning, Rev. Mike Adamek began our month of reflections on "Attention" with a message he described thus:

"Ralph Waldo Emerson was a master at focusing our attention on what was worthy in a life well lived.  We must celebrate the miracles in the mundane if we have ears to hear and eyes to see."

A good reminder that the wisdom of mindfulness and attention has deep roots in our UU faith.

This month also marks 20 years Rev. Mike has been bringing us monthly messages at UUFJC!  Many thanks to Rev. Mike for all he's done for us and for all the blessings of our years together!

This morning, Alexis joined us to conclude our month of reflections on Belonging.  When asked what makes them feel like they belong, people name things like "feeling like I've met 'my people'," "feeling safe," "feeling heard."  These things are gifts, but without intention and balance, we can keep ourselves comfortable and hold off the vital work of transformation.  Alexis cited Buddhist author Pema Chodron's book, "Welcoming the Unwelcome," in which she describes an awakened heart as a "wish to be free from what gets in the way of helping others."  For this we must become mindful --- mindful of the identities and spaces that define where we feel we belong, mindful of the places where we are shielding ourselves from the vulnerability that awakening and welcoming call us into.  We don't have to push ourselves to the point of excessive risk, but we are called to push beyond comfort into the zone of learning.  Try asking yourself: "What might I do to help others feel belonging?  Why might it be hard?"  If we can stay present with ourselves and each other through the challenges of learning, we can both belong and transform, and make our UU spaces both safe and brave.

Next Sunday, November 3rd:

Community Events this week:

This Tuesday, October 29th at 6:30 pm in their Art Gallery, Missouri River Regional Library presents: "The Climate for Change is Now."  You are invited to a showing of "Paris to Pittsburgh," produced by National Geographic Films. This film brings to life the efforts of individuals who are battling the most severe effects of climate change in their own back yards. It captures the urgency of the issue and the inspiring ways Americans are responding. The library is co-sponsoring this showing with the local branch of Citizens Climate Lobby, a group that empowers everyday people to work together on climate change solutions.  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more library events, visit MRRL.org.

This Friday, November 1st at 7 pm in their Art Gallery, MRRL presents their monthly First Friday Film: "The White Crow.".  This film traces Rudolf Nureyev's poverty-stricken childhood in the Soviet city of Ufa, to his blossoming as a student dancer in Leningrad, to his arrival at the epicenter of western culture in Paris in the early 1960s and a nail-biting defection to the West. It's the true story of an incredible journey by a unique artist who transformed the world of ballet forever.  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more library events, visit MRRL.org.

This week, Capitol City Cinema presents "Judy" (Thursday through Sunday).  For showtimes, more events, and more information, visit capitolcitycinema.org.
